Everyone has a story to tell. When we make the connection between our story and God's great story, we come away with HIStory, which involves each and every one of us.
"But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations." - Psalm 33:11
How amazing to think, that this baby being cradled in her mom's arms would not find out the journey her mom had been on for another 17 years. This is my story. That is my mom in the picture and that baby is me. God took hold of my mom's heart and she made the toughest decision.
I remember as a young child my family and friends saying, "Mijita you're such a little blessing." I thought it was cute and endearing at the time, but I didn't realize they "knew" something I didn't.
Many years ago my mom found herself with an unwanted pregnancy. Far from her family and alone with 3 children, there was no way she could fathom having another baby. She was terrified, “I can’t have another baby, I already have 3 children to take care of, what am I going to do with 1 more!!”
Before she headed to school, “something” within her prompted her to visit an older woman whom she admired. This older woman was a devout believer in the LORD and she loved this young mom. As the young woman stepped into the house she cried, “I’m going to do it…I’m going to have an abortion…I can’t have this baby…I’m going to do it on Friday!” The older woman replied, “I know what you need, what you need is a mom. Don‘t call me by my first name anymore, simply call me mom.” The young woman responded, with tear stained cheeks, “Don‘t you hear me…I‘m going to have an abortion!” to which the older woman responded, “As you drive to school, whenever you come to a red light or stop sign I want you to thank God HE got you there safely”. Having no knowledge or understanding of God, she headed out to her destination. What was this lady talking about? What does God have to do with this decision?
With all these questions scrambling through her mind, she started her car and drove away. Driving down the lonely street, mascara staining her weary face, she immediately came to a stop sign. “Every stop sign you come to, thank the LORD HE got you there safely…” The young woman quickly, said “thank you God for getting me here safely!” Less than a mile later she came to yet another stop sign and again a red light, stop sign, red light, stop sign, red light on and on…”How could there be these many stop signs and red lights!” But through each of those hindrances she thanked God for getting her there safely. Through each thankful cry “something” within her was changing her heart…it was “something” she could not explain.
As this weary stricken woman pulled into the parking lot she cried out to God, “GOD I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE, BUT I AM GOING TO HAVE THIS BABY…NOT BECAUSE I WANT TO BUT BECAUSE YOU WANT ME TO!” As soon as this young woman made this decision she felt a peace within her heart and somehow she knew everything was going to be okay. She realized the “something” within her was GOD.
The tough decision had been made. But the toughest conversation of her life was still to be had. At the age of 17 I organized a Chapel at my high school - and the topic... abortion. We showed a video of a kid who had an amazing life, friends and family...and then one day he went up to his attic and rummaged around. He dusted off an old rugged book and began to read it...this book was his mom's diary. The entry said, "On this day I made the most difficult decision of my life. I have decided to have an abortion." After reading the entry the boy suddenly disappears. I remember how much that struck my heart. How awful, the life this kid could have had, if his mom had decided to keep him and not abort him.
The next day while I was getting ready for school, I looked at my mom and said, "Mom, can I ask you something?" mom said, "Sure, mijita. Mom, did you ever want to abort me?" My mom burst into tears and laid on the bed...it hit me. Suddenly, my whole life flashed before me, all the times family and friends called me a blessing, the times people would refer to me as the little miracle...EVERYTHING made sense in my life. Sure, I cried and hugged my mom, BUT NEVER EVER once was I angry or hurt, RATHER I embraced my mom and rejoiced that God had revealed His plan for my life. God indeed had a purpose for my LIFE, He wanted ME TO LIVE!! God knew right then, that I was indeed ready for this news. As I look now at my 3 incredible blessings God has given me, I think...they too were one decision away from not being here. My mom's decision to give me LIFE has also given my girl's LIFE. How amazing and incredible is our GOD? So in honor of Sanctity of LIFE, I urge all of us to look at the bigger picture and TRUST and BELIEVE that God has a PLAN and a PURPOSE for every life.
I honor my mom this week, along with all the other moms out there who have had to make this decision. My mom gave me LIFE and because of her decision my girls have LIFE. I look at my girls in awe of God’s tender mercy. I was a decision and a few days away from not being here, BUT God in His Mercy softened my mom’s heart.
