Everyone has a story to tell. When we make the connection between our story and God's great story, we come away with HIStory, which involves each and every one of us.
"Time" magazine this week has an article titled: "Fear Factor - Two viruses have created an epidemic of anxiety about deadly infections in America. Here's how managing fear can give us an edge over disease." The article proposes managing fear in several ways: "acknowledging their [the public's ] fear," "pushing back in the information wars," "simple compassion." I'm sure these would help. But how about a complete defiance to this kind of fear? How about overcoming fear!
Naturally, we turn to the media to learn about current events which only ends up feeding our nerves and fears further and further. It reaches a point where we are so consumed by fear that we can't find our way out. But what if we tried a different approach? There will always be something to fear: earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, disease, drought, violence. The list is ongoing. God knew we would experience these fears and that is why He so graciously left us His Word. How about overcoming fear? My prayer is that in victory and fearlessness you can approach these next few weeks as the Ebola scare and season of viruses will only get worse. But there is hope, in Him!
Overcome fear? How do we even begin to do this? Well guess what, we don't have to. He already did...
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil--and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. - Hebrews 2:14-15 NIV
Jesus suffered for us and became the perfect Savior. He suffered criticism, persecution, flogging, bleeding, rejection and ultimately, crucifixion. Why did He do this? So we wouldn't have to. He did it to "free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death."
Ponder on this for a minute before reading on. What does this mean to you?
Jesus removed the chains of fear by facing death for us. God became flesh and shared in our humanity. By doing this He released us from the bondage of death and conquered it. Wow - this is so powerful! He stared death in the face and all that represents evil, the devil and conquered it. He suffered for you and bled so that you can live freely and never face death in the eye. You have freedom in Him. You are no longer a slave to your fear of dying. He is whispering, "Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand." -Isaiah 41:10 NLT
I picture Jesus sitting at the right hand of God looking down at us with tears in His eyes because His love for us is so great. He hurts when we hurt. Let's overcome fear by looking up to the One who conquered it all for us. To the One who can fill us with His strength because ours runs out and is insufficient. But His strength is more than enough!
The "Time" article concludes by saying "Millions of years of behavioral wiring tell us to be afraid. But it's entirely to our credit if we rise above our fears. An epidemic, approached in the right way, can sometimes be an opportunity to cure more than just a disease." I couldn't agree more. May this become an opportunity to cure more than just Ebola and fear - but a cure and eternal healing of your soul. In the name of Jesus we can not only rise above our fears this time around, but in anything that comes our way. We can claim VICTORY and FREEDOM with confidence.
"Worry is a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear."
-Corrie Ten Boom
Let's fill our thoughts with Him today!
Pray this with me:
Dear Jesus, thank you for the suffering you endured on the cross so that I may live freely. Thank you for your promise in Mathew ' You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.' We pray for victory over our thoughts and fears. We pray for faith in you that you will heal our souls of all anxiety and panic related to Ebola and the many diseases that threaten our health. We proclaim your victory over death and pray your promises over us: 'For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you." We give you all the honor and all the glory. In Jesus' name, Amen!
