Everyone has a story to tell. When we make the connection between our story and God's great story, we come away with HIStory, which involves each and every one of us.
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. - Luke 10:41-42 As I’m back home now after the long Thanksgiving break and celebration, I find myself feeling less joyful than expected from a holiday where Thanks giving is supposed to be so abundant. Time with family is always sweet and refreshing but I realize that there is one thing missing for me – the most important piece in all of this; and that’s that while on vacation and on holiday, I took a vacation from my daily walks and talks with Jesus. I took a vacation from my quiet time and time of meditating on His Word. I was so caught up in the travels and socializing that I put my sweet Father on hold for too many days. Of course this time traveling and with family is so important and so fun, but because I allowed it to compromise my time with Jesus, I’m left feeling less filled and more depleted. I hunger and thirst for His Word and His sweet, soft voice. It reminds me a lot of the story of Mary of Bethany and her sister Martha. Martha invited Jesus into her home in His travels from village to village. She became excited and distracted by all that she wanted to “do” for Jesus while He visited her home. I imagine her prepping a buffet in the kitchen with the best spices available. I’m certain she did it in love and enthusiasm for her Lord. Mary, on the other hand, sat at the feet of Jesus drinking and savoring His every word. Mary knew what mattered most. She understood that putting Jesus at the top of her list that day was the most important choice she could make. Jesus responds to Martha’s plea to make Mary help her by saying, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.” It’s His sweet words that resonate with me today as I think about my distractions not only during Thanksgiving but the upcoming Christmas season. All that I want to “do” this season yet Jesus is asking me to “be” with Him; just sit with Him, talk with Him, walk with Him, and meditate on Him. May we enjoy family and all that this amazing season has to offer. But may we not lose sight of Him and the only thing that matters.
